The total road trip through the cold desert of Himachal Pradesh from Delhi is about 1,650 km. The journey starts with an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi to Shimla, then climbs slowly up through Kinnaur – Sangla, Chitkul, the Khab confluence, and Gue – into Spiti Valley. The journey takes the travelers through Tabo, Dhankar, Kaza, Key Monastery, Chicham Bridge, Hikkim, Komic, Langza, Kunzum Pass and Chandratal Lake before coming down to Manali and back to Delhi by overnight Volvo. The itinerary is a perfect mix of adventure, Buddhist culture, ancient monasteries, highest villages and a crescent shaped lake at 4,300 metres.
This 9 days full circuit Delhi-Delhi goes into Spiti via Kinnaur and comes out over Kunzum Pass, so altitude increases gradually for natural acclimatisation and both overnight legs are done by Volvo bus.

The full circuit from Delhi is only possible when the Kunzum Pass is snow free. The best time to do this route is between June to October when both sides of Kinnaur and Manali are open and Chandratal is accessible.
Understood. Spiti Valley is a high altitude region with passes above 4500m. The roads are proper mountain roads, single lane stretches, water crossings post Gramphu and terrain that demands respect.
Best time to travel is June to early October when Kunzum Pass is open and the full circuit can be done. July and August are the best months to reach and camp in Chandratal.
The Volvo departs Delhi at approximately 11 PM on Day 1 and the return bus arrives in Delhi at approximately 10 AM on Day 9 — if you are flying or taking a train, plan to reach Delhi in the evening of Day 1 and book onward travel after 2 PM on Day 9. The circuit goes through Kinnaur so the altitude rises gradually but if you have breathing conditions, heart concerns or severe altitude sensitivity please consult your doctor before booking. Altitude medication ( Diamox ) is available locally and highly recommended for the Spiti leg.
| Month | Temperature |
|---|---|
| June | 5°C to 20°C |
| July | 8°C to 22°C |
| August | 8°C to 20°C |
| September | 3°C to 18°C |
| October | -5°C to 12°C |
Nights at Chandratal stay close to 0°C even in mid-summer, so warm layers are essential for the camping night regardless of the month you travel.
All the way around the track, conditions are different. The Delhi–Shimla highway is smooth and NH-5 via Kinnaur is mostly metalled with some rough cuttings after Reckong Peo. The Nako–Sumdo–Tabo–Kaza section is in reasonable shape but the Kaza–Kunzum–Chandratal–Gramphu segment is the roughest of the trip with water crossings and tight mountain sections where a high-clearance vehicle and an experienced driver matter most.
The tour starts from Delhi with an overnight Volvo bus to Shimla at around 11 PM – You can add the Volvo bus ticket as an extra at the checkout. If you are arriving in Delhi by air or rail, please plan to arrive by 4:00 p.m. on Day 1. we can arrange special pickup from Chandigarh , Shimla or any other city if you want.

| Kaza | 3,800 m |
| Key Monastery | 4,166 m |

Indian Nationals are not required permit for travel on Shimla – Kinnaur – Kaza – Chandratal route however a valid government issued photo ID is compulsory to travel the entire journey. Foreign nationals travelling through the restricted border areas of Kinnaur and Spiti require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) which can be obtained at Shimla, Reckong Peo or Kaza.
The type of accommodation varies considerably along the route. Shimla has hotels of all budgets whereas Sangla and Chitkul have riverside camps, guesthouses and wooden homestays. Tabo has basic guesthouses and a monastery stay and Kaza has an increasing range of hotels, homestays and hostels including the option of a local Spitian homestay. Accommodation is only in tented camps at Chandratal, a few kilometers away from the lake. Bookings should be made well ahead in the peak season (July-September). Manali has everything from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts.
BSNL and Jio offer the most reliable network coverage in Kaza and surrounding villages. Beyond Reckong Peo, coverage in Kinnaur is patchy, and in remote locations such as Chitkul, Chandratal, Chicham, Langza and the high passes, internet connectivity is sparse or absent. Download important documents and off-line maps before you leave Shimla or Kaza
We travel in comfortable Volvo buses and therefore do not need a hotel on these nights, on the overnight legs from Delhi to Shimla and from Manali to Delhi (on Day 1 and Day 8 respectively). You can purchase the Volvo bus tickets as an addon while checking out or you can get your own tickets and meet the taxi on Day 2 morning in Shimla.
Yes. The circuit enters Spiti via Kinnaur, so the altitude rises steadily from Shimla (2,200m) to Chitkul (3,450m), Tabo (3,280m) and only then Kaza (3,800m) and Chandratal (4,300m). This is the traditional route and is very gentle on acclimatisation. First time visitors should drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcohol for the first two days and not over-exert at altitude.
Yes, Spiti Valley is safe for families, couples, solo travelers and senior citizens who are medically fit. The roads are adventurous but manageable with a decent vehicle and a local driver who knows his stuff.
At altitudes above 4,000 m, the oxygen content is 40-50% lower than at sea level. Kinnaur is a gradual climb allowing the body to adjust before Kaza & Chandratal. Diamox (Acetazolamide) is often used for prophylaxis.
The Delhi–Shimla and NH-5 Kinnaur stretches are good metalled highway with occasional rough cuttings. Beyond Kaza, the roads are narrow and rough with sharp turns and water crossings. This is the most adventurous part of the trip especially after rain, towards Kunzum Pass, Chandratal and Gramphu.
Yes, if they are in decent cardiovascular health and get properly acclimatised. It is recommended that you get a medical check-up before you travel. The slow climb on the Kinnaur side of this package allows older travellers to acclimatise before the high altitude leg.
This 9-day package covers approximately 1,650 km from Delhi through Shimla, Kinnaur, Spiti Valley, Chandratal Lake and Manali and back to Delhi.
