The accommodation available changes dramatically along the route. Shimla and Manali have hotels for every budget ranging from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels. The main places to stay in Sangla, Kalpa and Tabo are homestays and small guest houses. Kaza has a growing choice of hotels and hostels. Chandratal has only tented camp accommodation – advance booking is strongly recommended during the peak season (July–September).

Yes. The itinerary is planned to acclimatise gradually, starting from Shimla at 2,276 m and slowly climbing through Kinnaur before entering Spiti. First time visitors should drink fluids, avoid alcohol for the first two days and not over exert at altitude.
Yes, Spiti Valley is safe for families, couples, solo travellers, and senior citizens who are medically fit. The roads are adventurous, but with a good vehicle and an experienced local driver they are manageable.
At altitudes above 4,000 m, the oxygen content is about 40-50% less than at sea level. The Kinnaur leg (Days 1-4) is a gradual acclimatization to help the body adjust before Kaza and Chandratal. Diamox (Acetazolamide) is commonly used for prophylaxis.
Chandigarh-Shimla-Sangla stretch is a national highway with a good metalled road. Beyond Kalpa towards Tabo and Kaza, the roads get narrower and rougher — single lane mountain roads with sharp turns. 4WD is the only way to go on the Kaza–Chandratal stretch, particularly after the rains.
Yes, provided they are in good cardiovascular health and acclimatize properly. It is advisable to have a medical check-up prior to travel. The Kinnaur route is more suited to older travellers than the direct Manali-Spiti route due to the gradual climb through Kinnaur.
