The Manali – Spiti circuit opens up once the Kunzum Pass is clear of snow, so the best time to drive this is from June to October when the roads are open and Chandratal is accessible.
June:Newly open passes, snow walls along road, less crowds.
July-August: Best time for camping in Chandratal with warm days and occasional water crossings.
September-October: Good weather and clear skies for photography before the passes close.

Spiti Valley is a high altitude area, with passes above 4,500 metres. The roads are genuine mountain roads — single lane stretches, water crossings beyond the Atal Tunnel and terrain that commands respect. Your safety will be our top priority, as our drivers have been running these routes for years.
The best time to travel is June to early October, when Kunzum Pass is open. July and August are the best months to reach and camp at Chandratal.
The itinerary keeps two nights in Manali so your body acclimatises before climbing to Kaza. If you have breathing conditions, heart concerns or severe altitude sensitivity, consult your doctor before booking. Altitude medication (Diamox) is available locally and is highly recommended for the Spiti leg.
| Month | Temperature |
|---|---|
| June | 5°C to 20°C |
| July | 8°C to 22°C |
| August | 8°C to 20°C |
| September | 3°C to 18°C |
| October | -5°C to 12°C |
Nights at Chandratal stay close to 0°C even in mid-summer, so warm layers are essential for the camping night regardless of the month you travel.
Conditions are different on the way. The Chandigarh-Manali highway and the Atal Tunnel stretch are mostly smooth, metalled roads. Beyond Gramphu towards Batal, Kunzum Pass and Kaza the roads are rough and adventurous with occasional water crossings and narrow mountain sections. The Kaza–Chandratal stretch is the roughest and a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially after rains.
Tour Starts From Chandigarh. Chandigarh is well connected with major cities of India like Delhi, Jaipur, Amritsar and Dehradun by flight, trains and road transport. The nearest airport to Manali is Bhuntar (Kullu) which is about 50 km away. If you want we can arrange a custom pickup for you from Delhi, Manali or any other city.

Indian nationals do not require any permit for the Manali – Kaza – Chandratal route but a valid government issued photo ID is mandatory for the entire journey. Foreigners need to get an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit the restricted areas of Spiti which can be issued at Kaza or Manali.
Inner Line Permit: Foreign persons to get. Available at the offices of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate at Manali, Reckong Peo or Kaza.
No Rohtang Pass permit needed as Atal Tunnel bypasses Rohtang to reach Lahaul and Spiti route.
The lodging available changes dramatically as you move along the trail. Manali has hotels for every budget from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts. Kaza has a growing range of places to stay including hotels, homestays and hostels, including a local Spitian homestay. Accommodation at Chandratal is limited to tented camps a few kilometres from the lake, and advance booking is strongly recommended during the peak season (July-September).
The most reliable network coverage in Kaza and nearby villages is provided by BSNL and Jio. In remote areas such as Chandratal, Chicham, Langza and the high passes, internet connectivity is scant or non-existent. Download essential documents and offline maps before you leave Manali or Kaza.
